Eddy and Patsy are a pair of high-powered career women on the London fashion scene. They indulge in cigarettes, alcohol, recreational drugs and to chase the latest fads in an attempt to maintain their youth and recapture the glory days. Their lifestyle inevitably leads to a variety of personal crises, which are invariably resolved by Eddy's daughter, ‘Saffy’, whose constant involvement in their exploits has left her increasingly bitter and cynical.

René Artois is a café owner in Nouvion during World War II. A reluctant, unwilling member of the local French Resistance, René finds himself dealing with four problems; the town's corrupt commandant, the Resistance's leader, the Gestapo agent and the love affairs with his waitresses, particularly Yvette Carte-Blanche, in which he has to conceal from his wife, Edith, while preventing each waitress from knowing of his romantic involvement with the other.

They are never successful and the stress of their miserable lives cause them to become irritable with each other.
